Art Pursuits Short Course
FRANZ SCHUBERT:
"the most poetic of composers"
London
with Richard Wigmore
Wednesdays, 12, 19 and 26
November 2008
Dubbed by Liszt "the most poetic of composers", Franz
Schubert was both the heir to the great Viennese classical tradition
of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven and the quintessential composer of
early Romanticism. In this lecture series Richard Wigmore explores
his music, familiar and unfamiliar, from the precocious works of
his teens to the visionary masterpieces of his last months. En route
he considers the sentimentalising myths and half-truths that have
attached themselves to the composer since his death at the age of
31: of Schubert the naïve, divinely inspired vessel; Schubert
the tragically misunderstood; or Schubert the feckless bohemian,
blithely scribbling down melodies on the back of the nearest available
menu.
The maximum number of students
is 30.
