Art Pursuits Study Day
ANTHONY VAN DYCK
Wilton House, Wiltshire
Saturday, 10 May 2008
Van Dyck was the most brilliant portraitist to work in England in the
seventeenth century. His elegant and refined representations of Charles
I and his court set a new standard for English portraiture. The 4th Earl
of Pembroke was amongst those who made the best use of Van Dyck’s
skills, and the Double Cube Room at Wilton House, where this study day
will be held, houses an outstanding collection of Van Dyck portraits
of the family. It is an ideal place in which to explore the origins of
Van Dyck’s art and the secrets of his success.
ABOUT WILTON HOUSE
Still very much a family home, Wilton House has been the ancestral seat
of the Earls of Pembroke for over 460 years. Built on the site of a ninth-century
abbey, the House, partly designed by Inigo Jones in the 1630s, is famous
for its magnificent seventeenth-century state apartments, Gothic revival
cloisters by James Wyatt, and fine art collection.
