Art Pursuits Study DayA few Places Available

The Mansion House, London

Monday,22 September 2008

The Mansion House (1739-52) – hardly ever open to the public – is one of the most splendid surviving Georgian town palaces in London. It was built as a residence for the Lord Mayor of London during his year of office, a place where he could live, work and entertain on a grand scale. Its interior has recently been transformed by the introduction of the Harold Samuel collection of Dutch and Flemish pictures, the finest private collection of such works to be formed in Britain in the twentieth century. It includes works by Frans Hals, Nicolaes Maes and Jacob van Ruisdael amongst others. It was bequeathed to the Corporation of London by Lord Samuel in 1987, to be hung permanently in the Mansion House.

As some of the paintings are quite small, the maximum number of participants for this study day is 20.

About the Lecturers Our morning lecturer, Vivien Knight, is Curator of the City of London's Guildhall Art Gallery.

This study day will be led jointly by Joachim Strupp and Nicola Smith, the founders of Art Pursuits. Joachim Strupp is a specialist in Venetian Renaissance art who has lectured widely on Palladio and led many tours to Palladio’s villas and the Veneto. Nicola Smith is an architectural historian who has worked as a historic buildings inspector for English Heritage, and as a university lecturer in art history.
