Baroque and Rococo Splendour in a Magnificent Landscape
30 June – 6 July 2008
The Bavarian Alps are famed for their beauty, ranging from the idyllic
to the sublime. They are part of an age-old cultural landscape, on which
many secular rulers and rich monasteries have left their mark. The countryside
is dotted with typical Baroque onion-domed towers, sometimes identifying
powerful abbeys, sometimes simple village churches. With its opulent
ornamentation, the Baroque fits the Bavarian landscape perfectly. Even
in the tiniest hamlets, the style left its mark. Economic prosperity
after the recovery from the 30-Years War and a love of decoration gave
rise to a flood of architectural commissions; Italian artists introduced
the style to the region, and Bavarian builders and stucco artists perfected
it. This new Art Pursuits Study Tour will enable you to enjoy the natural
and artistic highlights of this reassuringly old-fashioned part of the
world.
