France's Gothic cathedrals are one of the major glories of Western civilisation.
The visionary character of this beautiful style of architecture is nowhere
better seen than in northern France, where the style originated and where
it developed to an unrivalled peak of perfection. For this second of
three tours we will be based in the ancient town of Reims, once a thriving
Roman city and throughout the Middle Ages an important religious, political
and artistic centre. We will also visit Laon, little-known despite its
extraordinary wealth of historic buildings, and the ancient Frankish
capital of Soissons, each with an outstanding Gothic cathedral to explore.
French Gothic Cathedrals III (Spring 2009) will focus
on the cathedrals of Amiens and Beauvais. Though the series is linked,
each tour is free-standing and can be taken independently.
