Sicily

Part I: Palermo and the West

26 February – 5 March 2010

Lecturer: Dr Roberto Cobianchi

The Phoenicians called Palermo ‘ziz’ which meant ‘flower’. The beauty of this complex city may no longer always be immediately obvious to modern visitors, but, beneath chaos and grime, Palermo reveals itself as one of Italy’s great art centres. Its singular allure stems from the different traditions of successive conquerors, from the Romans to the Byzantines, from the Arabs to the Normans, from the Swabians to the French, Spanish and Austrians, resulting in a variety of original artistic, architectural and decorative creations. As well as giving you a thorough introduction to Palermo, our tour will take you to some of the most beautiful sites in the west of Sicily, from the grand Greek temples of Selinunte and Segesta to the resplendent mediaeval mosaics of Monreale.

This is the first of three independent tours covering the whole island. Parts 2 and 3 will look at the heart of Sicily and the southern coast, and at Taormina and the east.
