Jordan

Ancient cities, Biblical sites and desert castles

27 March – 3 April 2010

Lecturers: Sue Rollin and Jane Streetly

Jordan’s romantic associations - lost cities, Bible stories, Lawrence of Arabia - are well known, but the country is still a mystery to many. Many civilisations have left their mark on Jordan. Our tour includes spectacular sites created by the Romans and the Christian and Muslim peoples who shaped the history of this land. Three are World Heritage Sites. Perhaps most breathtaking of all, the rock-cut stronghold of Petra, hidden away in the mountains south of the Dead Sea, was the capital of the enigmatic Nabateans, a nomadic people of Arabian origin who created there a city unique in the ancient world.
