Venice, Ravenna, Aquileia and the magic of mosaics
22 – 28 March 2010
Lecturer: Dr Joachim Strupp
The basilica of San Marco is famous for its beautiful late mediaeval
mosaics, its vaults covered in millions of glowing glass tesserae. Our
study tour will give you a unique opportunity to explore this magnificent
church in detail and without the crowds. Moreover, it will take you back
in time to Aquileia to the north-east of Venice, a little-known treasure
trove with superb Roman spoils and three 4th-century basilicas with fantastic
mosaic floors. Finally, we will visit Ravenna whose Early Christian and
Byzantine monuments and mosaics are among the milestones of Western civilisation.
