BAVARIAN DANUBE

Classical Castra to Classicist Temples

30 June - 7 July 2010

Lecturer: Dr Joachim Strupp

This new tour will explore the most beautiful parts of lower Bavaria. Outstanding monuments are set in the wonderful landscape along the Danube which, near Kelheim, breaks spectacularly through the limestone rock. The river reaches its most northern point in unspoilt mediaeval Regensburg, our base, whose cathedral is the prime example of Gothic architecture in southern Germany. We will be going along the river south-east to picturesque Passau, dramatically situated at the confluence of three rivers, while further to the south and south-west we will visit the ducal residences at Landshut and Neuburg. From the Romans to the Bavarian kings of the nineteenth century, this area is a treasure trove of history and culture!
