DUCHIES OF SAXONY
Weimar, Gotha, Eisenach

22 - 28 August 2010

Lecturer: Dr Joachim Strupp

In 1485 Saxony was split into what was to become an ever-changing combination of petty princedoms. Of these the Duchy of Weimar is the epitome of German classic culture. Its handsome capital was the town of Goethe and Schiller and where Richard Wagner celebrated early triumphs. To the west, in the great Wartburg the sequestered Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German in 1521, while in nearby Eisenach J.S. Bach was born in 1685.Weimar furthermore stands for the beginning of modern aesthetics, as in 1919 the Bauhaus was founded here under Henry van de Velde, Walter Gropius and Lionel Feininger. At the same time the town became famous for the first German republic named after it, and whose ill-fated constitution led to the rise of the Nazi regime in 1933. This new study tour will explore Weimar and Thuringia, including the beautiful mediaeval cathedral cities of Erfurt and Naumburg, and nearby Gotha, the ‘other half’ of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, patrimony of Prince Albert. Tours to other parts of Saxony will follow.
