Dresden, situated at a scenic bend in the river Elbe, was one of the
political and cultural key players in the German Empire, developing into
an outstanding centre of European courtly splendour from the Renaissance
to the 19th century. In spite of vast destruction during World War II,
the city centre has preserved or regained many of its historical ensembles.
Enjoy visits to the city’s world-class cultural institutions, from
the glorious Zwinger palace which houses the Old Masters Picture Gallery
to the legendary ‘Green Vault’, the treasure chamber of the
Saxon electors and kings, and a performance at the great opera house
designed by Gottfried Semper. By boat and coach we will explore Dresden’s
suburban palaces and gardens, and the handsome and unspoilt city of Meissen,
home of the famous porcelain, the first of its kind to be produced in
Europe.
