Gardens and Romanesque Treasures of Northern Tuscany
13 - 19 September 2010
Lecturer: Dr Antonia Whitley
Lucca is Northern Tuscany’s graceful and serene capital. Within
its intact Renaissance walls, handsome churches and elegant palaces are
waiting to be discovered. In the surrounding countryside, ‘half-smothered
in oil and wine and corn and all the fruits of the earth’ (Henry
James), stunning villas invite you to stroll through their gardens and
enjoy their delightful giochi d’acqua. Not far to the east, Pistoia
is home to Giovanni Pisano’s pulpit at Sant’Andrea and a
magnificent silver altarpiece in the duomo, while to the south Pisa’s
Leaning Tower overlooks the most magnificent ensemble of mediaeval architecture
of the Campo dei Miracoli.
